Election Results

A few days ago we had a few elections around the country! There were a few wins that could be seen as potential predictors of future elections around the nation. First off Terry McAuliffe won in Virginia due to his coalition of the ascendant such as minorities, women and young folks. He emulated the model that catapulted Barack Obama to the Presidency and has been key for the Democrats over the past few elections cycles. Although he campaigned as a bipartisan politician, he never backed off his positions on guns and his social liberalism. This election is particularly interesting because many people believe that Virginia is the new Ohio. It will become more pivotal as future cycles come. All that being said I will include how Fox and MSNBC covered the win of the Governor-elect. How different is the coverage from the news organizations.

  1. Interesting post, Ernesto. The title of each coverage says it all. The Fox article is almost a manual for future Republican candidates stating "GET THE WOMEN VOTE" while the MSNBC one is all about "GUN CONTROL IS A PRIORITY." Again, rather than simply stating the news, "So-and-so candidate won" the media goes into a speculative and ideological frenzy. As for the elections being future predictors, I would not go as far as saying that. I have heard so many predictions about 2016 that are very unfounded given how much can change between now and the end of next year as well as 2016. The final aspect of the articles I find interesting is that neither states the simple statistics of the aggregate vote percentages for each candidate. Instead, Fox dissects the votes into several categories while MSNBC ignores the vote statistics completely. Excellent examples of poor, slanted news reporting (I do not think it merits the name 'journalism').
